Reviews:
. . . offers a firsthand perspective on social issues such as teen suicide, bullying, obesity and ridicule, teen pregnancy and abortion, and voluntary sterilization. The book also offers valuable insight to counter the frequent tendency to medicate rather than fully treat emotional illness. (Mike Youds, Kamloops Daily News, May 22, 2004, titled My Dark Places)
Dealing with the pain of the past is what is at the heart of this self-published book. Barriere leaves little to the imagination as she describes her earliest childhood memories in Winnipeg and winds through her desperate teenage years in Vancouver.
As the physical and emotional abuse at home continued, she reached out for acceptance from others, frequenting seedy beer parlours at 13, having an abortion and attempting suicide before she was 16 and having voluntary sterilization at 21.
An advocate of psychoanalysis, her story details the 10 months of twice-a-week therapy that put her on the road to recovery from years of bulimia, borderline anorexia and obesity.
Barriere has written a courageous story of her struggle through childhood and adolescence and, in the end, forgiveness and recovery. (Diana Skoglund, Kamloops This Week, June 11, 2004, titled Author Sets Her Own Terms)
On My Own Terms: A Memoir is very well written. I found myself engaged in her story, identifying with her confusions, and weeping over the horror of certain episodes in her life. The author has a powerful story to tell and tells it with excellence. (Judge's Remarks, 2004 Writer's Digest International Self-Published Book Awards)
Dear Darlene,
I wanted to thank you for "On My Own Terms" your memoir. It was very well written. I couldn't put it down once I started. Your courage to share yourself with others, so they in turn can have hope, is a gift, as I'm sure some of these memories were not easy to relive and then record. (Carol Leeuw, Kamloops, British Columbia)
. . . couldn't put it down, it is so well written and I really loved it... It flowed beautifully and had very powerful emotions attached to it. (Nancy, Abbotsford, British Columbia)
This is one powerful book! (Simone, Kelowna, British Columbia)
Dear Darlene,
Thank you for sharing your life, your guts, your weaknesses, what you are.
I couldn't help smiling when, in reading your acknowledgments, I saw that you said thank you to the agents and publishers who rejected your manuscript. With your courage, you showed them they were wrong doing this.
The story of your difficult life is very stimulating. For sure that reading your book will help other people who have lived in bad conditions; but it also helps people like me, who have been lucky enough to be raised in a normal family. Seeing how courageous you have been and still are, it helps stopping us complaining for much smaller problems we all have to face.
Your courage, your determination and your faith in life are outstanding: thank you again for having shared them with us.
At the end of the book, the 10 discussion questions are very relevant and could start good discussions. Thank you. (Gilles Lafleur, Kamloops, British Columbia)
Darlene
It was wonderful. I enjoyed it immensely and it sure is incredible what you have endured. What can I say! (Deb, Calgary, Alberta)
I was hooked from the first pages I read. (Dawn, Calgary, Alberta)
A compelling read. The honesty with which the author recounts the horror and the pain of her memories and familial relationships are overshadowed by the triumph of her journey. This book is a rare gem, it tells a difficult truth about the author's life, but it focuses just as much on the journey and the successes as it does on the pain and the struggle. Once I had finished the last page, I needed a few minutes of stunned silence to digest the powerful message that the author weaved, that there is a possibility of unconditional love and acceptance from oneself as well as others after the most horrible of experiences. (Amy, Calgary, Alberta)
