Social Worker Determined to Listen to Foster Childrens Claims of Abuse

by Corey
(North Carolina, USA)

I am in that situation currently. I work as a contract social worker and the children I've been supervising visits with are making claims of abuse. DSS is blowing the 10 year old off and accusing her of lying. Mom is very loving and kind but a drug addict who never even hit her kids. Neglectful? Yes, but they would be better off with her than the abusive foster mother they have now. This breaks my heart. I've already made one complaint and I won't stop. I didn't become a social worker to turn a blind eye to abuse.

Keep doing the job you're doing. I can't count how many stories I've received over the years about children telling, only to not be believed. Continue to be the advocate for them. Escalate the complaints when you have to. All too often, DSS (actually, the people in charge at DSS) are too busy checking numbers and assessing the bottom line to take claims from children seriously. Sometimes their own prejudices and their own jadedness also gets in the way and they turn a blind eye. The children need you, so keep up the great work you're doing. I send you and these children love, light and healing energy. Thank you for sharing with my visitors and me.
