Child Abuse is Not Fair

by Mom Robbin

I feel that no child should be harmed from child abuse. I also feel if a girl can have a baby then she should take care of it. She or her husband or boyfriend should not let nothing happen to their child.

Children having children...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

Child abuse IS unfair; I couldn't agree more, Mom Robbin. I also believe that when children have children, they must own up to their responsibilities, but they need a tremendous amount of help doing so. To expect a teenager to automatically know how to raise a healthy child is expecting too much. It's an expectation that gives rise to child abuse: An overwhelming number of teen parents abuse or neglect their babies/children in some way because they are mentally and emotionally ill-equipped to handle the enormous responsibility. The maturity required to raise a healthy well-adjusted baby/child just isn't there because a teens brain isn't finished growing and developing; that doesn't happen until about age 24 -25. What must be considered are the helpless babies; babies at great risk for child abuse. So while I agree that girls (and boys) who have children should be made to take care of their babies, families and society must be willing to offer support; otherwise, the innocent baby will end up paying the price.

There are those who would say that abstaining from sexual activity prevents a girl from getting pregnant in the first place, and as such, they should abstain. This is an unrealistic expectation. Preaching abstinence is not a bad thing; but it can't be the only thing. Facts are facts: teens are getting pregnant at an ever-increasing rate; and with it, rates of child abuse. It is why I believe that adolescents need access to birth control, and one of the reasons why I believe young teens must be taught parenting skills and what it's really like to have a baby to care for. It is why I am highly supportive of school programs that involve the use of "fake" babies for this purpose. To do anything less is to keep our heads buried in the sand. To do anything less will continue to put babies in jeopardy. A child does not ask to be born; but when that child is here, all of society must band together to ensure that child is not harmed.

Thank you Mom Robbin for offering your comments on this sometimes controversial issue.

How Right You Are
by: maurice

The amount of loving caring parents I've come accross in my travels who say that they should be the real educators of the facts of life to their children is growing and growing. But alas an equal amount are scared to talk about the facts of life to their children for reason best known to themselves. Education: Education is what is needed is what we are alwyas hearing or the lack of it when it comes to underage sex and pregnancies. The school should do it/the church should do it, be the educators in this very natural area of a childs life. Yes, abstinence should be encouraged. Why I ask have we a growing percent of teen pregnancies in 2009. Who failed? Parents in my understanding as they are the prime educators of their children in all areas of their lives especially when it comes to tecahing them about their bodies. Alas because so many have failed we have abuse growing rather than decreasing around us. We need to educate couples before they get married, when their married what abusing their chidren is. It is one sure way of preventing innocent children from going through hurt and pain during their childhood/teenage years and adolecent years. How right you are Mom Robbin.
