You make a good point...
by: Linda Settles

Elaine,
You make a good point. Abusers often desensitize themselves to suffering in others. How often have we heard of abusers who say, "I didn't HURT her” or find some other way to rationalize away the pain of their victim? Anyone who is cruel to animals may very well be desensitized to the pain in others--whether it is animals or people. Being desensitized to pain is a short step away from using pain to get what someone wants-or even taking pleasure in another person's pain, as many abusers do.

You are probably aware that animals are being used in therapy with children and adults. An equestrian recovery program is very effective in helping survivors of any kind of emotional trauma recover. The horse will react to subtle changes in the survivor’s emotional expression, even when the survivor himself/herself is unaware that their emotions have changed.

Keep up the good work you are doing. :-)

Animals as buddies
by: Anonymous

Hi Elaine, how are you feeling? It sounds like very tiring work having to disect everything that you do!

I liked your post about pets as buddies. When I was a kid my family had a dog, black and white cocker spaniel, and loveable as he was, he was incredibly daft. When I was a baby, he guarded my pram, and woe betide anyone who got anywhere near me. I still miss him!

Now I have a load og gorgeous teddies who I love and cherish like pets/children. When I first had my eldest I used to knock the stuffing out of them. I loved them so much and they really looked after me when I was in and out of hospital. I still have them, though when my mum and dad visit they another pair of teddy bear fun feet and a sleeping teddy all go in my wardrobe. they look after me so well, and now I don't even strike the elder "boys" when they are "naughty."

I even have names for the whole lot of them. I had betetr go now as I have run out of time
