They didn't NEED proof...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

I'm delighted that you have forgiven the people who let you down, Shantelle. That forgiveness really is critical in moving on. But for me to leave it at that would be irresponsible. You see, your family had a legal, not just moral, obligation to report what they suspected. It wasn't their job to prove anything.

In Canada, it is the law that every citizen report known or suspected child abuse. It is up to Child Protection or Social Service Ministries across the country to do the investigation and determine whether or not child abuse is founded. It is not up to family members, or anyone else for that matter.

All too often, years after the abuse was so evident, families use the excuse that they couldn't prove what they suspected; it usually boils down to being afraid of how the rest of the family would have responded if a report had been made.

Please, if you are a family member who suspects that child abuse is taking place, put the child's interest in front of your concerns over keeping a family intact: Report known or suspected child abuse to the proper authorities. If you don't, you enable the abuse to continue, and in Canada, you could face penalties for NOT reporting.
