So much pain...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

Tim, I couldn't agree with you more. Not only do children in general need to be protected so that they can grow up to be healthy, well-round and contributing adults, but YOU deserved to be loved and nurtured and protected, without fear of physical or emotional abuse. You are NOT worthless. You are a special, valuable and articulate man who was dealt a rotten hand, both at home and in care. Your father should be in prison for the rest of his miserable life and so should the woman who was charged with taking care of you in the foster home.

I can only imagine what it was like to be betrayed and abandoned by your molesting father, then, just when you believe you are in a safe place, to be further abused by the woman you should have been able to trust. There is no question that there were others who knew and remained silent; those idle souls are every bit as responsible for the abuse you suffered as they would have been had they been the ones raising their hands against you. Shame on them for turning their backs on you, a helpless child!

You stated you have difficulty maintaining relationships and that you sometimes feel self-hatred and depression. That is not at all uncommon in adults who have grown up with such adversity as you did, as you well know, Tim.

I don't know what is available to you in the way of counselling, but if at all possible, I strongly urge you to seek out some form of therapy to help you deal with the emotional residual of your past. You deserve to have some peace and contentment in your life. A good counsellor may be able to help you achieve some of that peace and contentment.

Thank you for writing and sharing your message about protecting children. Everyone needs to hear that message if we have any hope of battling this ever-present, epidemic that is child abuse.

about your story, it reminded me of my brother. We both were adopted out together and endured a lot of abuse by our adoptive mother. She made sure that we felt worthless. My brother was always a good boy and very sensitive, he is still living with the pain and torture of what happened when we were kids.
