Very honest...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

Steve, I'm not at all surprised that back in 1970 you would have been told "to wait until he got married" after you disclosed what this man did to you. Such ignorance....

Yes, the abused often become abusers. In Canada, 20% - 30% of sex offenders are adolescents; in most, if not all cases, these offending youth have been offended against. You've been very honest in your post; it was very brave of you to admit to what you've done.

Even though there was an element of it that you found enjoyable (perfectly natural for both males and females—see my article on this site at Child Abuse: Dispelling 6 Myths About Self Blame), you know how violating it is and you know how confusing it is and you know it feels to be assaulted. I do hope you AND your brother have entered into some form of therapy for the effects the abuse had on both of you. But even more importantly, harsh as it may sound, in order to ensure neither of you offend another child.

The following are some pages on this site that you might find helpful:As for whether or not he had other victims, that is highly likely. But his sex offending behaviour is not what you must concentrate on, Steve. What is more important is for you to come to terms with the effects the sexual assaults had on you. Reading through the various information pages on this site may help you with that.

Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.

Hi Steve,

While I was reading your post I was thinking about how I minimize what was done to me. what that music teacher did to you wasnt ok. It was abuse plain and simple. no adult has the right to touch a child..period.
