You are very strong...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

Megan, it is perfectly natural for a very young sexual abuse victim to begin questioning what happened to him/her when the teenage years come about, and not before. What happens is that as the person matures physically and emotionally, and as puberty progresses, knowledge and more mature values start to come into play. It is often in adolescence that the person is overwhelmingly struck with emotions. It is not at all uncommon for the teen that was sexually assaulted in childhood to exhibit signs of depression and engage in a host of destructive behaviours as a means of coping. As the youth matures into adulthood and gains more life experiences, the emotional residue often deepens even further. As a now 24-year-old young woman, you now seek healing. That tells me you are an amazingly strong young woman, Megan. Many adults either never reach the place you are now at, or they are much older (decades older, in some cases) when they do.

I do hope you are in some form of counselling in order to help you through all this; doing it alone can be more daunting than it needs to be. A counsellor can help keep you on track and provide necessary feedback and clarity.

Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me, Megan.
