So brave
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

I am delighted to learn that your molesting father went to prison for the crimes he committed against you and your sister, El. It was so brave of you and your sister to testify against him. He doesn't deserve to be a free man. And he certainly doesn't deserve to ever be allowed around children again.

As for your mother, she should have kept you and your sister safe. She should have stopped the abuse from continuing. It shouldn't have mattered that her life was threatened if she went to the authorities; she should have found a way, EVEN if it meant losing her daughters to the system. Because THAT'S what mothers are supposed to do for their children. They are supposed to keep them safe from harm, NO MATTER WHAT.

It's good that you're writing a book of your experiences, El. Writing can be therapeutic. And it sounds as though you've decided to turn pain into power by deciding to help other abused children. I commend you for that.

I also urge you to seek out some form of counselling for the hurts you are still feeling today. I don't know what the system in South Africa has available for you, but if there is a way for you to obtain some kind of government sponsored therapy, take it. You're worth it, El, you really are.
