Don't keep it inside...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

Brittany, I'm very sorry that your dad didn't believe you. You must have felt a great deal of betrayal when he took your stepmother's side, the side of the woman he was having problems with and divorcing, over you his daughter. My heart goes out to you.

You've taken a first step by disclosing what happened to you on this website. You didn't say how old you are, so I'm taking an educated guess that you are still in school. If you are, consider talking with your school counsellor. You can also contact Child Help at 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453). They are staffed 24/7 with professionally trained counsellors who will listen to you. They are not a reporting agency, although they can help you through the process of reporting if you decide to disclose the abuse. And though I don't know how long ago the abuse took place and whether or not there is a statute of limitations where the abuse took place, I still recommend you report what happened to the authorities. Your stepmother could very well be abusing another child, Brittany. Reporting the abuse will at least get what she did to you on record so that if more reports come in about her, then perhaps another child will be spared what you were forced to live through. Just know that the abuse wasn't about you; it was all about your stepmother. She was the one at fault here, not you. She had all the power. You are not to blame for any of it.

I wish you all the best, Brittany.
