I commend and applaud the fact that you broke the cycle of abuse. Congratulations on that front! Your "stepmother" was a truly evil woman. It wouldn't surprise me if she did these horrible things to you just for the sake of doing them. Based on what you wrote, you probably didn't have to do anything, just being around was likely reason enough for her. And I couldn't agree more: A slap on the wrist for child abuse is basically enabling that abuse to continue. The trouble is, we haven't really come all that far over the decades when it comes to child abuse. The deaths of children all over North America, indeed the world, that continue to be reported at the hands of their parents/caregivers is evidence of that. It is especially disturbing when Child Protective Services have been or are involved and the child either dies or is left severely harmed. But you and I and all my visitors can make a tremendous difference. Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.
