Thank you for sharing your story and your all-important messages with my visitors and me. And just for the record, no one here would EVER consider that you as a 4-year-old could even possibly defend yourself.

Spare the rod...?
by: Peter Schmedding

Amanda, you have been the unfortunate victim of parents that have been conditioned to 'spare the rod and spoil the child'. They do not know how much damage this biblical sentence has been done to you and over the centuries to millions. This attitude has spread well beyond those who believe in the bible and there is no guide when and if it may be appropriate or not. To punish a four year old in this way can never be condoned. Furthermore, young children not only are helpless in that situation, they easily come to believe it's their fault.

As we get older, forgiveness has been suggested to get over the abuse and get on with life and yet, in cases where the abuse has been going on for years, the hardest thing is to forgive and forget. I was glad to read that you are now in recovery. There is some comfort in the thought that those who have lived through hard times are more likely to appreciate the good things that life has to offer. Also keep in mind that there are always people willing to help and support you and so the day will come when depression gives way to a new attitude where you realise that everyone has their special interests and abilities that lead to a successful and fulfilling life. So have you.

My best wishes go with you.
