Healing...
by: Darlene Barriere - Webmaster

Bob, at the risk of offending you (not my intent, I assure you) I do have to say that I'm not a believer in time being a healer. There are hundreds of stories on this site alone that reflect the opposite is true. Unless a person acts in a way that allows healing to take place (such as getting some form of counselling) child abuse survivors become blocked and continue to live in the past by constantly reliving the terrible memories. Unless an abuse survivor actively pursues some type of healing program, the reality of what happened will manifest in unhealthy ways throughout that person's life. I believe that healing is a choice we as survivors must each make for ourselves. Only through that choice can true healing begin. The first challenge is in taking that first necessary step: admitting you need help. The second is in a willingness to do the work required.

Sounds as though you've done a great deal of work, Bob. I applaud that you went into therapy to get yourself the help you needed. So many men wouldn't, especially if you came from a time when "professional help" had a stigma attached to it; that was certainly the case in my twenties, and we're almost the same age.

Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.
