Most definitely eldest children can be, and are, targeted for abuse. My article on this site titled Why parents target a specific child for abuse identifies many reasons that children are target. Though not an exhaustive list, it does identify autism and other so-called "abnormalities" seen in a child as reasons for targeting. Keep in mind that there is no excuse for targeting a child, only an explanation. It doesn't surprise me that you felt relief when your mother died because that signaled the end of the abuse. I'm delighted that you are in a happy marriage and as a mother. If you ever feel the need, don't hesitate to seek out some form of counselling in order to deal with whatever residual you may still be experiencing as a result of growing up with targeted abuse. Thank you for sharing your story with my visitors and me.

Laura, your mom was wrong. You are not ugly; you are beautiful. You are not stupid; you are smart and articulate...and you are perfect just as you were, so never believe any of those lies that she was spewing. Something's seriously wrong with her and she should've gotten the help that she needed. If she didn't want to be there, then she should've had the courage to give you up to any sympathetic relative you had instead of abusing you. The path that she chose for herself was inexcusable. Oh, and you are not to blame for her nearly-sadistic, ignorant behavior; she was to blame because she chose to abuse you. You were the child; she was the adult; she had all the power and only misused it over you. Oh, and mothers who abuse their own children are, in fact, one of the real abusers. Oh, and I'm glad that you are in a safe place now; I hope that you try counselling.
